More electric or alternative fuel cars on our roads could help reduce CO2 emissions and fight air pollution in cities. Only people won’t buy them because there are so few recharging - refuelling stations and those stations are not being built because there are so few potential customers. To break this vicious circle, Parliament is considering new rules that would require member states to build minimum number of charging stations by 2020. On 26 November, the Parliament's transport committee members backed rules that would require member states toset targets for building public networks of recharging points and alternative fuel stations by 2020.

The hope is that public intervention will help to change the current situation. Today, the main alternative means of powering vehicles are liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), Compressed and LiquefiedNatural Gas (CNG, LNG), electricity, biofuels and hydrogen. However, they meet only a small part of the EU’s transport needs as countries still heavily depend on oil, which makes up more than 90% of transport fuels used.
